Elementary School
  The Elementary School [Grades 1-5]
The OLGIS Elementary School builds a solid foundation of learning skills and real world experiences. Our curriculum includes a strong literacy foundation, exploration of our world through social studies, hands-on experiential science, and problem solving math. The atmosphere is nurturing and supportive to meet the intellectual, social, physical and emotional needs of all of our students. Classes are taught with developmentally appropriate expectations in mind, along with an emphasis on social skills, designed for each age group.

Our educational journey keeps an eye on the future to fill each year with opportunities to explore, dream, create and reflect. Students join this learning expedition to develop life-long habits of learning. In addition, we strive to place character development and attention to our school core values at the very heart of student growth. We believe that respect, responsibility, personal integrity, empathy and communication should be foundational to every student’s learning experience at OLGIS.

1st Grade
The student age range at the beginning of the academic year for Grade 1 (CP) is: 6-7 years.

Grade 1 teachers recognize that each child learns in a different way and at a different pace. That's why we differentiate instruction and use a variety of instructional methods to accommodate different learning styles and to nurture and meet the unique needs of our young children. We challenge all students to achieve their highest potential within heterogeneous classes and we hope to ignite in children a passion for learning and a positive attitude towards school.

Grade 1 teachers pay special attention to the social and emotional development of our children. We teach values and social skills such as respect, responsibility, integrity, empathy and communication both within the classroom community and within the greater school. We help students to become more independent by teaching them a variety of strategies to initiate friendships and to solve their own problems.

Classroom teachers provide instruction in the core subjects of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In addition, Grade 1 children learn Art, Music, and Physical Education (PE).

2nd Grade
The student age range at the beginning of the academic year for Grade 2 (CE1) is: 7-8 years.

Children are told from the beginning that Grade 2 is a community. We aim to develop this community by creating a sense of belonging and by providing opportunities to experience success both inside and outside the classroom. We believe that the psychological sense of community encourages children to have positive attitudes to learning and play and to be persistent in challenging situations. We also recognize that each child learns in a different way and at a different pace. That's why we use a variety of instructional methods to accommodate different learning styles.

Core subjects in Grade 2 are Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Grade 2 students also study Art, Library, Music, Physical Education (PE), Computers, and a world language like English, French, or Arabic.

Learning is assessed both formally and informally. This helps us determine a student’s overall achievement, identify their strengths and weaknesses and implement intervention strategies as appropriate. Progress reports are sent home three times a year. They are a valuable communication tool between teachers and parents.

3rd Grade
The student age range at the beginning of the academic year for Grade 3 (CE2) is: 8-9 years.

At OLGIS Upper Elementary School we understand that children need more than fully developed literacy and numeracy skills. In Grade 3, students are also encouraged to develop their non-academic skills. Our objectives for the year include helping students form positive dispositions and attitudes, develop curiosity and confidence in themselves as independent learners, and discover a positive sense of self. In addition, we focus on creating tolerance for others whose perspectives and experiences might be different from their own.

In Grade 3 our core subjects include Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. The children also study Art, Library, Music, Physical Education, Computers, and a world language like English, French, or Arabic.

4th Grade
The student age range at the beginning of the academic year for Grade 4 (CM1) is: 9-10 years.

The Grade 4 curriculum is designed to build upon basic skills and to develop children’s self-esteem, sense of competence and avidness for learning. Students participate in activities as a whole class, in groups and independently. We expect children, as they mature and develop, to acquire needed perspectives and the foundation for life-long learning in a global society.

Teachers provide instruction in the core subjects of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Grade 4 students also study Art, Library, Music, Physical Education, Computers, and a world language like English, French, or Arabic.

5th Grade
The student age range at the beginning of the academic year for Grade 5 (CM2) is: 10-11 years.

Grade 5 provides the basis of the years of academic development in Middle School. Our instructional program seeks to develop critical thinking, problem solving and strong communication skills across a range of disciplines. Students read and write every day in order to develop strong habits and independent skills.

We focus on proficiencies and practices with longstanding importance in mathematics education.  Students develop strong conceptual understandings in math by solving rich problems, using models and communicating their mathematical thinking, and also developing fluency with numbers.

Science and Social Studies take a project-based approach, integrating social issues and service learning opportunities as appropriate. Field studies are incorporated whenever possible.

Foreign languages are taught daily with a focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Specialists provide instruction in music, art, and PE, several times a week. Technology and library/media are integrated within the core academic subjects.
